Does this process take as long as I’ve heard about?
Unfortunately, yes – the Social Security Administration moves at its own pace, and it receives tens of thousands of applications per week, so this can be a very long process.
In rare cases, an applicant will be approved within several months, but all too frequently it takes between 16 to 30 months to be approved for benefits. If you are approved, however, the Social Security Administration will very often provide you with retroactive benefits and/or back pay.
